John Story
From an early age I’ve had an interest in radio, and can still remember my first radio appearance – on KRMO-AM in Monett, Missouri, in spring of 1953 when a man from the radio station came to my school there and had my class sing a song, and then interviewed several students. What he did that day struck me as a fun way to earn a living, and I never forgot the experience.
While attending the U of E (then Evansville College) in the fall of 1963, I applied for and got an announcing job at the school radio station – WUEV-FM (then WEVC) - and my future was sealed.
While holding various jobs at several local movie theatres during the early 60s, I kept an eye on a radio career, which led me in June 1965 to WPCO-AM in Mt. Vernon, Indiana, then in September 1965 to WVHI(now WJLT)/105.3FM, WGBF/1280AM in 1967, WIKY/104.1FM in 1975, then in 1990 back to the renamed 1280AM which for several years was called WWOK, and today is of course WGBF/1280AM again and is owned by Regent Communications of Evansville.
After 45+ years in the Evansville market on-air as a DJ and behind the scenes as a Music Director, Production Director, salesman and for the past 15 years as Program Director of Newstalk 1280 WGBF, I’ve had a long radio career and still very much look forward to coming in to the station everyday. Radio (when done right) is a lot of fun!
